We are all guilty of wasting water at one point or another, whether it’s leaving the hose running or taking that extra long hot shower. But have you ever thought about the easy steps you could take around the home, to save water and ultimately those climbing water bills

Well, if not, here are 10 easy, no fuss steps you can take inside and out to help out your pocket and our environment.

Easy as...

1. Reduce outdoor watering

Try reducing watering times between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and water in short bursts. This lets water soak into the grounds and roots without the chance of evaporation in the hot afternoon sun. Try using a sprinkler that offers big drops of water close to the ground. Smaller drops and mist can evaporate before they hit the ground.

2. Check for broken or clogged sprinkler heads

Ensure your sprinkler nozzle is clear and directed toward your garden bed and plants. You could try mixing a solution of Hillmark Scalex and soak the nozzle to clear any lime or iron build ups.

3. Give the broom a try

Too often we get the hose out to clean patios, sidewalks, and driveways. Try using a broom or electrical blower vacuum instead.

4. Washing your pets and cars

Try washing your car and even pets on an area of the lawn that needs watering. You can even empty old fish tank water or stale pet bowl water onto the lawn. This will save you pulling out the hose later on to water that dry patch. Polyglaze Wash and Wax is a great product that only requires one bucket of water to wash your entire car!

5. Keeping your pool clean

Try using a pool cover to keep your pool clean, reduce chemical use and prevent water loss through evaporation. Also ensure the pool is not filled to the brim to avoid wastage when splashing around in the pool.

6. Collecting water

Collect water from your roof by installing gutters and down pipes, direct these to plants and trees.

7. Fix leaks in all plumbing fixtures

Check for and repair leaks in all toilets, faucets and shower heads. Don’t let minor leaks go unfixed. Amazingly, a leaky toilet wastes up to 700L water per day.

8. Doing the dreaded dishes

When doing the dishes by hand, don’t let the water run. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water. Every little bit counts!

9. Matching the loads

Run your dishwasher and washing machine only when you have a full load. Matching the water level of your wash with the load to be washed can save you up to 4000L a month.

10. Energy efficient appliances

When shopping around for new appliances look for water efficient devices. They may be a little more expensive in price to purchase, but will end up saving you money down the track on water bills and wastage
